About Tarangire National Park
Tarangire National Park is the unsung hero of Tanzania's Northern Safari Circuit. Covering 2,850 square kilometers, Tarangire is famous for two defining features: ancient, massive baobab trees that dominate the landscape and the largest concentration of elephants in East Africa. During the dry season from July to October, Tarangire transforms into a sanctuary for wildlife from hundreds of square kilometers around, drawing animals directly to its lifeline: the Tarangire River. --- - The Tarangire River Lifeblood As seasonal water holes dry up across the Maasai Steppe, wildlife concentrates in immense numbers along the perennial Tarangire River: • Elephant Gatherings: Groups of up to 300 elephants gather at the riverbeds, digging into the dry sand to unearth fresh underground water streams. • Wildlife Congestion: Thousands of wildebeest, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, elands, and impalas congregate along the banks, closely trailed by lions, leopards, and wild dogs. --- - Iconic Baobabs & Diverse Birdlife • Land of the Giants: The landscape is dotted with centuries-old baobab trees, often called "Tree of Life" trees, which provide water to elephants and nesting spots for raptors. • Birding Capital: With over 550 bird species recorded, including endemic species like the yellow-collared lovebird, rufous-tailed weaver, and ashy starling, Tarangire is a premier destination for birding safaris.
